Sita Sings the Blues
Foreign Correspondent's Club of Thailand. Bangkok. November 1, 2012. I thoroughly enjoyed the animated film about the Indian religious epic Ramayana, which is important to Hindu culture and is well-known in this part of the world, because a Buddhist version is part of Thai culture. The amazing thing about the movie Sita Sings the Blues, is that it was created on a small home-computer, by American cartoon-artist Nina Paley, after a trip to India. It takes a very irreverent view of the Ramayana and cannot be shown in India. It is highly entertaining and has been shown at many film festivals, but has not been released for general viewing. It's nice to know that a creative artist unconnected to the Hollywood mega-studios, can produce a feature that is every bit as good as a major production. One does not have to have an interest in Hindu mythology to like this film, but it inevitably does enlarge the viewer's cultural knowledge.
